Time Tested Books is very excited to announce a
presentation by
Arthur Shapiro on Sacramento area butterflies based on his new book A
Field Guide to the Butterflies of the San Francisco Bay and Sacramento
Valley Regions, published by University of California Press.
Art Shapiro has dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge about
the butterfly and passing that knowledge on to others. After receiving
a PhD in Entomology from Cornell in 1970, Shapiro has worked as a
researcher in the Department of Zoology at Oxford and as an instructor
at City University of New York. In 1972, he joined the Department of
Zoology at the University of California, Davis and has been there ever
since. At UC Davis he has taught General Zoology, General Biology,
Chemical Ecology, Philosophy of the Biological Sciences, and Animal
Evolution. He has engaged in groundbreaking research on
butterflies in
the Andes and Patagonia and has created Art Shaprio’s Butterflies Site,
an online culmination of 34 years of studying the butterflies of the
Central Valley. He is Fellow of the American Association for the
Advancement of Science, the California Academy of Sciences, the Royal
Entomological Society of London, and the Explorers Club and has
received the Academic Senate Distinguished Teaching Award and the
Outstanding Adviser Award at Davis and has been a Fellow of the Davis
Humanities Institute. Suffice to say he will probably be the one person
who knows the most about bugs to ever grace our bookstore.
